Physical education



Health and Physical Education offers experiential learning, with a curriculum that is relevant, engaging, contemporary, physically active, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate. Integral to Health and Physical Education is the acquisition of movement skills, concepts and strategies that enable stu​dents to confidently and competently participate in a range of physical activities.

In Health and Physical Education students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to support them to be resilient, to develop a strong sense of self, to build and maintain satisfying relationships, to make health-enhancing decisions in relation to their health and physical activity participation, and to develop health literacy competencies in order to enhance their own and others’ health and wellbeing.

The Strands

1. Promoting the health of individuals and communities. This strand focuses on:  

  • acquiring information about, and developing skills in, health and safety 
  • investigating how health is linked to individual behaviours. 

2. Developing concepts and skills for physical activity. This strand focuses on: 

  • enhancing physical performance in games, sports and other physical activities through applying basic movement concepts and improving strategic awareness in games, sports and other physical activities.

3. Enhancing personal development. This strand focuses on:  

  • personal and interpersonal skills
  • positive relationships

Time allocation
The physical education teacher teaches one lesson per week to each class. Through the physical education program children develop health and fitness, a positive attitude towards physical activity, movement control, body management, hand-eye and foot-eye coordination and specific skills associated with a wide range of physical activities. ​
What PE covers

What PE covers
Term 1 and Term 4 – Swimming. Swimming is a part of the school’s physical education program for students and children are expected to participate. The standards are reflected from the Royal Life Saving Australia’s ‘Swim and Survive’ levels. Swimming lessons are conducted in terms 1 and 4 at Moorooka SS. Students also prepare for their school swimming carnivals during term 4.

Term 2 – Athletics. Students learn a variety of throwing, jumping and running activities, which also helps them prepare for school sports days and carnivals towards the end of term 2. Some of the content includes long jump; high jump; shot put; discus and sprinting.

Term 3 – Ball sports. During term 3, students engage in a variety of sporting skills. Abilities such as kicking, bouncing, striking and throwing & catching are all covered. Students also participate in modified games of sports to help them understand rules and how to play the game.
