Rethinking our rubbish

Rethinking our rubbish

Term 3 is all about rubbish! Brisbane City Council will be working with our school to reduce waste by 70% by implementing three waste minimisation initiatives across the school:

  • recycling;
  • composting; and
  • nude food.

Over the next 3 months, we’ll be getting recycling bins in our classrooms and the school yard for all of our paper, cardboard, plastic and metal items, and we’ll also be introducing composting systems to recycle our food waste such as worm farms and compost bins.

We’re also getting pet chickens!

Recycling and composting alone will help us to greatly reduce our rubbish, but as the program progresses, we’ll also be introducing ‘nude food’ Mondays, which means on Mondays, we’ll all be packing rubbish-free lunches.

The program involves a Council Officer working closely with all of our classes, and just by participating, students will have the opportunity to win some great prizes.  As the term progresses you’ll learn more about ways we can minimise waste at school and at home, and we hope you’ll come on this waste minimisation journey with us!

If you would like to learn more about the program, you can contact the Council Education Officer, Deana Nichols:
